Meeting the challenges: Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific

In 1990, delegates assembled at the Plaza Hotel in Bangladesh for the Ministerial Level Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific. It was recognised that the Asian and Pacific Region continue to bear the costs of environmental problems largely created by developed countries. With support from Australia, France, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UNDP and ADB, it was to provide aid for environmentally sound and sustainable development.

This audio programme presents, the Marovo lagoon area is under consideration for World heritage listing being the largest lagoon with double barrier reef systems in the world. Its also wildly renowned as one of the most beautiful part of the Pacific, because of its stunning forests, reefs and mangroves. The suspended company, is operating in the Solomon Islands under the name Salveign products, actions have been taken against company because of allegations for illegal forestry practices and breaching the its conditions of its license.

SPREP in 1992 sponsored a seminar on the Environment and Reforestation for the Catholic Youth Group. SPREP officer Neva Wendt, represented SPREP to this seminar. In her speech, she touched briefly on SPREP's roles and objectives and also current projects implemented throughout the Pacific by SPREP. With 3 tapes continuing after the other, the seminar raises several issues particular to Samoa and a visit to the Nafanua Hortricultural Centre at Vailima and links environmental issues with biblical understanding.
