A 20 Year Report - Because consumer demand for fish is at an ever increasing rate, there is a need to clarify indigenous rights, maintain balance between conservation and development, and for international agreements to regulate fishing activities throughout the Pacific region. Not only are South Pacific marine environments thought to be among the most unique in the world, but South Pacific communities also rely on these environments for their livelihoods. However these marine habitats are also under the threat from pollution, climate and overfishing. This manual aims to support teachers to plan lessons around marine conservation. The educational philosophy is to foster a sense of responsibility among students, such that they are able to participate in making decisions that impact their environment.

This audio programme explores how the Solomon Islands is combining customary conservation practices with formal environmental legislation to strengthen the protection of natural resources and ecosystems. Emphasising community involvement, the discussion highlights how traditional knowledge and local governance systems are being integrated into national legal frameworks to support sustainable resource management. The programme also examines environmental challenges such as mangrove degradation and the importance of protecting these ecosystems for their ecological and community value.

The assessment aligns with the Pacific Coral Reef Action Plan 2021–2030, supporting key action areas
such as capacity building, habitat conservation, and research utilisation. Rather than imposing a uniform
regional model, the recommendations emphasise tailored approaches that reflect national and sub
regional priorities and governance structures, particularly given responsibilities for reef monitoring and
